Is a Mountain Home Getaway in Your Future?
For many of us, leaving the hustle and bustle of crowed city life is a dream. Maybe you just want to escape from your over-heated southwest desert home for the summer or spend the Christmas season in a winter wonderland. If this is you, a primary or secondary home in the mountains may be just what you’re dreaming of. Owning a mountain retreat just outside of Denver enables you to enjoy the front range lifestyle to the max. So, just what features should you look for in your mountain home?
Feature #1: Road and Town Accessibility
In order to enjoy your mountain home, you have to be able to get there. You want to make sure that you can easily access your home, especially if you have to cross other properties to get there. It’s also important to remember that living in the mountains will require a commute to do ordinary things like running to the grocery or visiting fine dining and entertainment locations.
Feature #2: Connectivity
The location of your new home may come with some modern convenience drawbacks, like limited cell phone coverage and Internet connection. If these are services are important to you, make sure to check that they are available to the degree that you expect and desire.
Feature #3: Septic Systems
Septic systems are a part of owning a home in the mountains; there is no sewer system like there is in town. Septic systems are rated for the number of bedrooms that your home is allowed to have. If you plan on some day adding additional bedrooms or living spaces, make sure that the size of the septic system will accommodate these additions.
Feature #4: Potential Rental Income
If the home is to be used as a short-term getaway, you could offset some of the cost of ownership by renting the home out while you’re away. Some areas prohibit short –term rentals and it’s better to know this information before you buy. That said, mountain homes can offer great income from short-term rentals!
Feature #5: Utilities
It’s extremely important to know what it’s going to cost to heat your home during the colder winter months and what types of utility services are available. Harsh weather could leave you without electrical service for extended periods, so your home having a backup generator is something to consider. Being tucked away on the mountain without phone service or being able to watch TV or a movie using your projector can be stressful and turn into a real hassle. It’s better to be prepared than stuck when the time comes.
A mountain home can add a lot of joy to your life, if it is done correctly. Keep these five features in mind while searching for your mountain home getaway. It also helps having the guidance of a qualified mountain home realtor. They’re help in your search is priceless.
